Description
This iconic Wassily Chair, designed by Marcel Breuer in 1925, was produced by the Italian furniture manufacturer Gavina in the 1960s. Originally named the Model B3 chair, it was later renamed the “Wassily Chair” in honor of the painter Wassily Kandinsky, who admired its groundbreaking design.
Characterized by its sleek and minimalist aesthetic, the chair features a tubular steel frame paired with black leather strips for the seat, back, and armrests. The use of tubular steel—an idea inspired by Breuer’s observation of bicycle handlebars—not only gives the chair its distinctive, modernist appearance but also ensures it is lightweight and durable. The leather elements, stretched across the metal frame, offer a blend of comfort and sophisticated design. Despite its minimalist form, the chair leaves a strong visual impression, making it a standout piece in any interior.
Even after six decades, the chair remains in great original condition. Minor signs of wear, a subtle patina, and minimal leather cracks, are typical for a piece of this age. It is a beautifully preserved symbol of the Bauhaus modernist movement and a testament to innovative design. Although the original Gavina stickers have not survived, the distinctive craftsmanship of the metal and leather confirms its authenticity as a Gavina production.
We also have a second identical chair, with the leather showing slightly more signs of use. If you are interested in purchasing the pair, feel free to contact us. We would be happy to provide additional photos.
