Description
This world-renowned Cesca chair by Marcel Breuer comes from Italy and was produced by Gavina, most likely in the late ’50s or early ’60s. It represents an iconic blend of form and function, embodying the pioneering spirit of modernist design. Designed in 1928 by Breuer, a master of the Bauhaus school, the Cesca chair is celebrated for its innovative use of materials and elegant simplicity.
This particular Cesca chair was made by Gavina in Bologna, Itasly in the early 1960s. It features a classic black varnished beech frame that adds durability and complements the minimalist design. The seat and backs are made from woven cane, a natural material that beautifully contrasts with the dark frame and adds a touch of warmth and texture to the design. The honey-gold color of the cane weaving has aged beautifully over time, with a lovely patina that enhances the chair’s warm appearance.
The frame is crafted from tubular steel, showcasing Breuer’s revolutionary use of this material to create a seamless, cantilevered design. This construction not only provides exceptional comfort and support but also gives the chair its distinctive, timeless silhouette. This combination of steel, beech, and cane highlights the balance between industrial and organic elements that Breuer mastered.
Despite the passage of time, the chair remains in perfect original condition. The maker’s mark “Gavina”, placed at the bottom of the seat confirms the original provenance and refers to early versions of the chair produced by this manufactory. Absolutely minimal signs of use are typical for furniture of this age. We have only cleaned them ensuring they can serve in their full charm for the next decades.
