Description
This particular Cesca chair, also known as the B64, was designed in 1928 by Marcel Breuer and brought to life by the legendary Italian furniture manufacturer Gavina, likely in the early 1960s. It was Dino Gavina who suggested the new name for the B64 model, under which the chair gained international recognition: Cesca.
The Cesca chair is celebrated for its innovative use of materials and elegant simplicity. The frame is crafted from tubular steel, showcasing Breuer’s revolutionary use of this material to create a seamless, cantilevered design. This construction not only provides exceptional comfort and support but also gives the chair its distinctive, timeless silhouette.
The original seats and backrests from Gavina were hand-woven. In this chair, the rattan cane fibers pass through the wood from underneath in several places, confirming its original and early provenance. The Vienna straw has an amber hue that deepens into charming orange-brown-red tones. The carefully joined natural beech wood frame complements the warm look and provides structural integrity to the chair. This combination of steel, beech, and cane highlights the balance between industrial and organic elements that Breuer mastered.
The authenticity of the chair is confirmed by the Gavina sticker attached underneath the seat. All parts are original and bear some marks of the time the chair has lived through. All signs of age are shown in the accompanying photos. The honey-brown color of the cane weaving has aged beautifully over time, developing a lovely patina that enhances the chair’s warm appearance. This chair is very rare to find in such a good original, intact condition.
