Description
This elegant double bed, designed by one of the most influential Danish furniture designers, Hans J. Wegner, was manufactured in the 1950s by Getama, an esteemed manufacturer with whom Wegner had a long-standing collaboration. Renowned for his minimalist and functional designs, Wegner emphasized the natural beauty of wood and a commitment to craftsmanship, both of which are evident in this piece.
Teak, a favored material in Danish modern furniture for its durability, warm color, and beautiful grain, was Wegner’s choice for the bed’s frame, highlighting his focus on both practicality and aesthetics. The front panel of the bed, originally covered with old vinyl fabric, was reupholstered with high-quality black aniline leather,
The bed also features two bedside tables attached to the headboard. The floating design of these tables adds a sense of lightness to the overall design and keeps the floor uncluttered. Each table includes a practical drawer and a niche, offering storage solutions that maintain the bed’s clean lines. The tops of the tables are made of black glass, which contrasts beautifully with the teak and brilliantly reflects the light from the bedside lamp, adding a modern touch to the design. This thoughtful combination of materials—wood, glass, and metal—exemplifies Wegner’s skill in blending different elements to create a harmonious and functional design.
The bed is in excellent vintage condition. An interesting shipping emblem from the 1950s/60s is found on the back, marking the first Danish client’s address, adding a unique historical element to the piece. The engravings of both the producer and the designer are located on the back of the headboard and one of the nightstands, The frame under the mattress is original There are absolutely minimal signs of age, such as small scratches on the glass, which are typical for furniture of this age. The wood has been refreshed with Danish oil.
