Description

The Eames lounge chair and footstool, models 670 and 671 respectively, were designed by Charles and Ray Eames and introduced by Herman Miller in 1956. The inspiration for the design was the desire to create a chair with a “warm, receptive look of a well-used baseball glove.” This iconic mid-century modern furniture set combines luxury with comfort, featuring a molded rosewood veneer shell and soft cushions in light brown leather. The chair rests on a five-star cast aluminum base with a swivel mechanism, while the matching ottoman/footstool is supported by a four-star base.

The 1970s production maintained the original design’s integrity, utilizing high-quality materials and craftsmanship. The ergonomic design provides exceptional comfort, making it ideal for lounging or reading. The set’s timeless appeal has ensured its place in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

The set is newly upholstered in full-grain, natural aniline leather, renowned for its unparalleled quality and tactile appeal. Aniline leather is the most premium grade of leather, derived from the top layer of the hide. It is dyed using plant based soluble dyes without a surface pigment, preserving its natural beauty and showcasing unique textures and subtle markings, making each piece truly one of a kind. This premium finish matures beautifully, developing a rich patina over time that adds depth and character. The leather on this set is thick and durable, yet remarkably soft, offering a perfect balance of strength and comfort. It is also one of the most long lasting materials and can be used for decades, possibly even for a century.

Rosewood, a rare and highly sought-after material, was highly prized in furniture-making, especially during the mid-century modern era. Thanks to its hardness and strength, rosewood is ideal for furniture that must endure daily use.
