Description
This world-renowned Cesca chair by Marcel Breuer comes from Italy and was produced by Gavina, most likely in the early ’60s. It perfectly represents the modernist design form and function blend. Designed in 1928 by Breuer, a master of the Bauhaus school, the Cesca chair is celebrated for its innovative use of materials and elegant simplicity.
This particular Cesca chair features a classic black varnished beech frame. The seat and back are made from hand woven cane, a natural material that beautifully contrasts with the dark frame and adds a touch of warmth and texture to the design. Manual cross over weaving trough the holes distingushes Gavina chairs from other Italin versions form the period. It is a very labour consuing process that was orignaly introduced in the 1930 in early Breuers versions manufactured by Thonet. The honey-gold color of the cane weaving has aged beautifully over time, with a lovely patina that enhances the chair’s warm appearance. The frame is crafted from tubular steel. This construction provides comfort, support and durability but also gives the chair its timeless silhouette.
Despite the passage of time, the chair remains in great original vintage condition, with minor signs of use that are typical for furniture of this age. The maker’s mark “Gavina”, placed at the bottom of the seat, confirms the original provenance and refers to early versions of the chair produced by this manufactory. Cane seat and backrest bores a signs of usege but the chair is fully fuctional. Perfect addition to any desk or as a decrative side chair.
