Description
This world-renowned Cesca chair with armrests by Marcel Breuer manufactured in Bogna in Italy by Gavina, most likely in the late ’60s. It represents an iconic blend of form and function, embodying the pioneering spirit of modernist design.
Designed in 1928 by Breuer, a master of the Bauhaus school, the Cesca chair is celebrated for its innovative use of materials and elegant simplicity.
It features a classic black varnished beech frame that adds durability and complements the minimalist design.
The seat and the back are made from woven cane, however the seat was redone some time in the 1970s-80s based on the colour of the cane. The honey-gold colour of the cane weaving has aged beautifully over time, with a lovely patina that enhances the warm appearance.
The frame is crafted from tubular steel, showcasing Breuer’s revolutionary use of this material to create a seamless, cantilevered design. Additionally, the chair features comfortable armrests.
Despite the passage of time, the chair remains in perfect original condition. The maker’s mark “Gavina”, placed at the bottom of the seat confirms the original provenance and refers to early versions of the chair produced by this manufacturer.
Absolutely minimal signs of use are typical for furniture of this age. We have only cleaned them ensuring they can serve in their full charm for the next decades. The seat colour indicates that it was replaced in the 70s- 80s. Rattan is preserved in excellent shape.
This original chair, rare to find in the vintage market, is sought by collectors. It is functional and can serve for decades to come.
