Scandinavian dressing table by Viken Mobelfabrik, attributed to Fredrik Kayser, Norway, 1957
Description
This charming Scandinavian dressing table was produced by Viken Møbelfabrikk and dates back to 1957. It was most likely design by Fredrik Kayser who was cooperating with Viken between from 1956 to 1966. It is a marvellous example of high-quality Norwegian mid-century modern carpentry combined with elegance and functionalism.
Crafted from beautiful and durable teak wood, the dressing table features slightly rounded edges and tapered legs, adding lightness to the construction. The brass feet harmonize nicely with the warm color of the wood. The essence of the piece is its mirror, composed of three parts: a central mirror flanked by two adjustable side mirrors, allowing for multiple angles and a comprehensive view. Two compartments hidden behind masterfully crafted tambour doors provide ample storage space, enhancing the table’s practicality. All of these elements add a touch of warmth and intimacy to any interior.
Despite the passage of time, the dresser is in great original vintage condition. The tambour door mechanism and the mirror’s hinges work smoothly. The wood has been cleaned and protected with professional compounds, and the mirror is intact. While we can speculate that the dressing table may have been designed by other designers or tailored to the factory’s requests, deviating from Kayser’s usual style, the producer stamp at the back confirms the authenticity of its origin.
